Signal Boost: Henna is NOT Black

bigbardafree:

In researching hair dye allergies (since I’ve recently developed one) I’ve found out that the main culprit is a chemical used in hair dye called PPD. As an alternative, I’ve decided to start dying my hair with henna. Unfortunately, I’ve come across a scary misconception: There are a lot of people out there who think that henna contains PPD and, therefore, don’t recommend the use of it for people with PPD allergies. That scares me because it tells me that the use of “black henna” is a lot more widely used than I thought.

Some people make a black temporary tattoo dye by mixing black hair dye with henna and calling it “black henna” because it stains the skin black instead of brownish-red. PPD is also a fairly common allergen. If you’ve never dyed your hair, you might not even know if you are allergic, and if you are, the use of “black henna” will trigger the allergic reaction and make you sensitive to products with PPD for the rest of your life. In case you’re wondering what products other than hair dye contain PPD, here’s some info. When “black henna” is used on the skin of someone allergic, the side-effects can range from mild to life threatening.

Scarier still, artists using “black henna” can often get away with injuring people because PPD allergy is a “delayed hypersensitivity reaction” meaning that the symptoms can start anywhere from 3-10 days after application.

Because of this delay, many PPD “black henna” artists in vacation areas and beaches don’t know they have hurt people, becuase the people have gone home when the itching and blistering start. Few people go back to confront the artist. Therefore, the artist can go on injuring people, ignorant of the suffering they’re causing. If the reaction was immediate, like a bee sting, no one would use para-phenylenediamine black dye to make body art.
(source)

Here’s an important guide to figuring out if someone is using “black henna”

1) If the stuff they’re using is jet black and stains the skin quickly, it’s probably PPD-based black hair dye.

Most PPD slingers call their stuff “Black Henna” or “henna” and lie about what’s in it. Others have no idea what they’re putting on you, they’ve just found a way to make easy money. You will NOT get a straight answer just by asking! You’ll have look at the paste yourself. Traditional safe henna paste is khaki green, greenish brown, or very dark brownish green. Traditional henna paste smells like spinach, or you may smell fragrances like Pine, Tea Tree Oil, or Mentholatum from essential oils they’re using. PPD doesn’t have a smell.

2) Ask them how long you should leave it on.

If they say to leave the paste on for less than than 1 hour, they’re using PPD. Henna doesn’t work that fast. People working with real henna will tell you to leave the paste on more than an hour, as long as you can, even overnight.

3) Ask them what color the stain will be when the paste comes off.

If they tell you the stain will be BLACK when the paste comes off and that it will stay black, they’re using PPD. Henna will leave an orange stain that will darken to red brown or dark brown, but it will NOT be black when the paste flakes off. Ask the person to put some on their own skin. Wait 1/2 an hour. If there’s an orange stain there, it’s henna. If there’s a black stain there, it’s PPD.

4) Ask them how long the stain will last.

PPD “Black Henna” stains typically last more than a week and stay black throughout that time. Henna stains last 1 - 3 weeks, fading to orange during that period. There are some safe body art products, such as body paints, that come in black, but they don’t last longer than 3 days. If it’s black and long lasting, it’s probably PPD “Black Henna”!

5) Ask them what’s in the mix.

A reputable henna artist will answer: henna, lemon juice, essential oils. You’ll be able to smell them. The artist should be able to show you what they’re working with. You should see green plant powder, and safe natural materials. The PPD “Black Henna” artist will probably lie.

(source)

A few more things:

 • “Black henna” is illegal in Canada, but all natural henna is completely legal.
 • Before synthetic hair dye, indigo used to be referred to as “black henna” because it if you dye your hair with henna first, and then with indigo, it will dye your hair black. Therefore, if you see a package of “black henna” in a Middle Eastern or Indian grocery store, it’s probably Indigo.

I would post pictures of the allergic reactions, but they are graphic. Click here for more info and examples of the dangers of “black henna.”

PLEASE reblog and spread the word. Stay safe, everyone!

Okay guys, I need your help.
I kept it quiet until today because the voting hadn’t started yet, but I’m a finalist in Doodle 4 Google again! This is really exciting, and the Google people came to my school for the ceremony today! So I’m going to New York. ;v; <3333
This is how I need your help: although I’m a finalist, Google uses popular votes to nominate the NATIONAL finalists. National finalists get a $5,000 scholarship, which would REALLY REALLY REALLY help me with college, as I’m going to Pratt and it isn’t the most affordable college on the planet.
So it would be really, REALLY appreciated if you could vote for me! (I would love you and hug you and send you kisses and sddfs????)
And even better for me, if I became the National WINNER, the winner gets a $30,000 scholarship. And $50,000 goes to their current school’s tech.
so, yeah. I can’t express how awesome it would be if you could vote for me;;; ;v;
(also, spot the TARDIS in the picture! ahaha…)

Vote Here! Thank you so much!
(and don’t forget to vote for the other age groups!)
(and help spread the news, if you can?)

roxanneritchi:

The background: in a sticky spot financially, work keeps cutting my hours, etc. So, I’m selling some stuff! Among that stuff:

I’m selling the first three seasons of Stargate: Atlantis on Region 1 DVD for $45, including domestic shipping and handling; if you live outside the USA, shipping will unfortunately cost a bit more. The box sets are unwrapped, but I’ve only watched the first season on DVD; all the discs in that set played fine and I’m assuming the rest are fine, too. Each season normally retails for about $22-40.

If you are interested, please do send me a line either here on Tumblr or via e-mail at thepriceoftea(at)gmail(dot)com. Unfortunately right now all I can take is Paypal (same address as my e-mail). If you do buy the set, I’ll ship it out within the week, bubble-wrapped and with extra padding in the box to make sure everything’s as safe as possible. :)

Thank you very much for your time!

Isn’t Korra exciting? Yes, yes it is! But sadly, not so exciting that my brain gets fixed and I no longer feel nauseous and slightly-prickly-twitchy paranoid looking at multiple images moving at different frame rates.

Two words, one tag: gif set. My brain, my current SSRI withdrawal and I thank you.

Please check my film out and PLEDGE if you can! If you can’t pledge, a simple REBLOG would be forever appreciated! For more information, click the image or click here to visit the Kickstarter page.
I’m an animation student in my final year, and I’m working on my thesis film right now which will help me graduate and hopefully launch my future art career. But I really need $500 to get the film completed. The money will go towards crucial parts of the film that I can’t do alone: Sound design, music, and art assistants.
The rewards include postcard prints of my “Dude on a Bison” drawing, my “Strongman and Pianist” drawing, and signed sketches from me sent in the mail. ANY AMOUNT HELPS, so please pledge if you can!

My previous films have been fun, gory romps that kinda test the waters of what I’d like to create. To me, animation is a medium where you can make anything happen in excruciating, hilarious detail and be totally believable, so that’s something I want to have fun with. And Our Argument is that as well. But Our Argument is more personal.
No one wins in an argument. When anger starts, you feel like the greatest person in the world, like you need to win, like you need to fight for what’s right. it makes you feel like a superhero, at the very least a miniature Hulk.
But the voice of temperance and rationality catches up to you too late, and you realize you’ve been an ass and you’ve probably hurt the person you care most about.
Realization, regret, and self loathing. Those are the parts of arguing that stick out the most to me. And this film is meant to show what those look like.
You can check out more of my animation work on my Vimeo page, or on pollums.com (for non-animation work as well).
THANK YOU!!!
